Aqualimpia Engineering e.K. (AQL) a German Excellence
in Waste-to-Energy Is a leading German full-service engineering firm specialized in the treatment and valorization of organic waste and wastewater.
We focus on the production of renewable energy (biogas and biomethane) through advanced anaerobic digestion systems.
Our CSTR tropicalized lagoon digester are engineered for maximum energy yield. By utilizing a continuous flow of fresh biomass coupled with optimized mixing protocols, our digesters ensure consistent and high-volume biogas production.
We design and construct industrial-scale anaerobic digesters backed by high-standard German engineering and over 30 years of hands-on experience under real-world operating conditions.

Most existing wastewater plants rely on Activated Sludge Systems, which are effective but energy-intensive. By the integrating a Digester or a UASB (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket) reactor at the head of your treatment line, you can revolutionize your operation.
Why move to an Anaerobic-Aerobic Hybrid System?
The UASB reactor or the digester handles the "heavy lifting" by removing the bulk of the organic load (COD/BOD) before it reaches the aeration basins. This strategic pre-treatment delivers immediate results:
Key Operational Benefits
Slash Electricity Bills: Drastically reduce aeration demand typically a plant's largest energy expense by removing the bulk of the organic load anaerobically before it reaches the aerobic stage.
A Collaborative & Cost-Effective Philosophy
We believe that the most successful projects are built on true partnership. At Aqualimpia, we don't just work for you; we work with you.
Our philosophy recognizes that you know your country’s environment, local regulations, and labor markets better than anyone. By integrating your local expertise and resources into the project, we can significantly reduce CAPEX, particularly in civil works like excavations, perimeter walls, and concrete structures.
Our Agile Execution Concept: We adapt to your needs and preferences. While we always lead the Engineering, Detailed Design, and Specialized Equipment Supply, we encourage our clients to take an active role in the civil execution (at a minimum, the lagoon excavations).
Our Commitment to Success:
Comprehensive Project Lifecycle Suppor

Proven Global Track Record
With over 50 successful international projects delivered in the last 10 years, Aqualimpia Engineering e.K. combines German technical excellence with a flexible, global mindset. We adapt to your reality, ensuring that your investment in POME or manure valorization is both world-class and cost-efficient.
The agitators prevent the formation of crusts and foams that inhibit the process. Agitators increase the production of biogas.
Pumps for the extraction and recirculation of sludge that settle to the bottom preventing from filling with sludge and collapsing.
They control the pressure of the cover membrane and prevent it from bursting due to high biogas volume storage and pressure.
Blowers for the extraction of biogas at pressures required by the generators or by the biogas flare.
The efficiency of a biodigester depends heavily on the nature of the feedstock. Understanding the chemical composition, biodegradability, and methane potential of different organic substrates is crucial for a stable and profitable operation.
Below are the most common substrates used in industrial and agricultural biogas plants:
With over a decade of hands-on experience, we have perfected the management of poultry litter. By applying our proprietary nitrogen stripping and dilution techniques, we overcome the technical barriers of ammonia to unlock the full potential of this 'power substrate,' ensuring efficient and stable energy production.
Livestock Manure (Swine and Bovine)
Animal manure is the backbone of traditional biogas production.
Swine Manure (Pig): Highly biodegradable and easier to pump. It offers a consistent methane yield and is often the most economical substrate for lagoon-type digesters.
Bovine Manure (Cattle): Contains complex fibers (lignocellulose). While its methane potential per ton is lower than swine manure, its high buffering capacity makes it excellent for stabilizing the pH of the digester when co-digested with more acidic substrates.
Dairy and Food Processing Residues
Waste from the dairy industry (whey, spoiled milk, wash water) is rich in lactose and proteins. These substrates have a very high methane potential but decompose rapidly, which can cause acidification. Careful monitoring and controlled feeding are required to maintain biological balance.
POME (Palm Oil Mill Effluent)
POME is a high-strength organic wastewater generated during palm oil processing. It is an ideal substrate for anaerobic digestion due to its high COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) and BOD5 (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) levels. Converting POME into biogas not only generates energy for the mill but also mitigates the environmental impact of one of the industry's most challenging waste products.
Integration of AD Systems into Existing Activated Sludge Plants
Activated sludge systems provide effective polishing but operate with high energy demand, particularly for aeration, which can represent up to 70% of total plant electricity consumption. Requires ⚠️ 1,2 – 1,5 kWh/kg DQO degraded.
They also generate large volumes of excess sludge, increasing disposal costs. By integrating an upstream Anaerobic Digestion (AD) stage, the organic load to the aerobic system is significantly reduced. This lowers aeration energy requirements, decreases sludge production, and enables renewable energy generation through biogas. The result is a more efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable treatment facility.
Customized Solutions for Every Substrate
The design of your biodigester (UASB or CSTR Lagoon) must be tailored to the specific substrate's characteristics, such as solid content and inhibitory risks.
Send us information about your specific waste stream, and our team of experts will present a customized technical solution and an estimated energy production report.
Transforming existing lagoons to digester
We offer the specialized technology and engineering expertise to retrofit and transform existing lagoons into advanced industrial-scale biodigesters, turning your waste into a high-value energy asset.
We proposed a transformation of the existing lagoon instead of a complete rebuild from scratch. By utilizing the existing footprint and implementing our proprietary mixing and gas-capture technology, we converted the passive pond into a High-Rate Industrial Biodigester.
We do supply worldwide.
